Decorative Parquet


Decorative parquet entered the present XXI century as an indispensable component of artistic treatment of interiors. Decorative parquet (mosaic parquet, palace parquet, fretted parquet) is a nonstandard product; it is fabricated in accordance with special drawings from different fine woods, commonly hardwood. From domestic species, besides those used for production of usual parquet, such wood as walnut, pear tree, apple tree, alder, juniper, smoked oak, yew tree, plane tree, boxwood, cypress is used for production of decorative parquet. For creation of stylish ornaments incrustations from ebony, mahagoni, amaranth, lemon tree, palm, etc. are applied.

Decorative Parquet

From the point of view of composition decorative parquet can be geometrical with constant repetition of the same element or pattern and picturesque - with unique curvilinear quaint patterns commonly forming some vegetable ornament.

Technologically decorative parquet is produced in two ways:
Decorative parquet produced using marquetry - creation of a pattern from separate planks which close tightly one to another,
Decorative parquet produced using incrustation, when inserts made from different wood species with various textures are cut in the main ground made of one wood species with one texture; inserts are cut in through all depth of the main ground. As a rule, it is decorative parquet from massive wood 15-22 mm.
Combinations of two ways are also used.

From the point of view of production technique decorative parquet usually directly connected with pattern composition. A character of picture on the front side of covering is always connected with decoration of walls and ceiling of a room. The most widespread are square shields 800x800 mm, 600x600 mm, 400x400 mm. These dimensions are usually multiples of area of the room where decorative parquet should be laid. Very often decorative parquet with geometrical pattern has wall elements forming a frame. Such wall shields have the length equal to the length of the basic shield and the width usually equal to the half of its width. Decorative parquet on such shields correspond a frame bordering the main pattern of the floor. Rosettes and borders are the main elements of the decorative parquet; they can be with identical success combined with compound patterns of decorative parquet and with classical ornaments of parquet floor.

One of the main peculiarities of decorative parquet is the combination of compound patterns and use of different wood species - traditional and exotic. Generally these are geometrical and curvilinear ornaments. This peculiarity of decorative parquet allows making true all designers' projects.

For a long time decorative parquet was traditionally associated with palace style and was considered one of the evidences of interior wealth, nobility and refinement. Nowhere in the world there were so many various highly artistic parquets as in Russia. Just in Russia the culture of pattern creation and parquet production, projected by architects, was carried to perfection.

Our richest heritage in this branch of decorative art is widely used in modern conditions. Nowadays, thanks to modern technologies of woodworking, the production of decorative parquet has become more technological and, as a result, more affordable.
